Rest assured if you purchase an older home in NJ there may be or may have been an underground oil tank on the property. Just because a house has converted to gas for its heat source doesn’t mean the tank was removed. Townships used to let owners keep their tanks below ground buried with sand and/or stone. Now most will not issue a passing inspection without seeing it for themselves and having it tested to ensure there was was no leakage during its time underground. If you think the home you are considering purchasing or currently own may have an underground tank the best, most effective way to know for sure is to have the property scanned by a licensed contractor.
