A client recently asked me where is a healthy take out lunch in Short Hills, NJ. I adore the Godfather sandwich at the Millburn Deli, a chopped salad from Bagel Chateau and a good piece of pizza from La Strada Nuovo, but, after burning out these options over time, and adhering to a more healthy eating plan, I sought out a new addition to my lunchtime options. And believe it or not, I have slowly become addicted to the delectable take out sushi at the Shoprite on Morris Turnpike in Springfield.
Quality sushi and Shoprite don’t sound like they could possibly be good together…but, I promise if you try it, you won’t be disappointed. Next to the deli counter on the right side Shoprite has a sushi counter with a bonified sushi chef preparing fresh take out rolls every day. These include what you would expect to find at a supermarket sushi counter like; California Rolls, Spicy Tuna rolls etc. But, what I find enticing are the rolls wrapped in rice paper without any rice and therefor even healthier. I don’t have anything against rice- in fact, I love sushi rice. However, by removing this ingredient, it makes this yummy treat far less fattening.
The chef prepares these “riceless” rolls a couple of different ways. Some have raw tuna, some have crabstick and they even have a grilled chicken option. They each are made with rice paper, vegetables and a light helping of a special sauce.
Of course eating a healthy take out lunch is always more expensive than eating junk – but the health benefits outweigh the increase in costs. Each roll costs approximately $7.95 and I usually grab 2 at a time. The Springfield Shoprite is located at 727 Morris Tpke, Springfield, New Jersey 07081.
