If you have not had the joy of attending the annual Mansion in May fund raiser – do not wait another minute. Each year the Women’s League of Morristown Hospital run a showhouse in a fabulous mansion. Designers are hand picked and each one has its own room to transform however they see fit.
This year it is being held in the Glynallyn Mansion located on Millionaire’s Row in Morristown, NJ. Glynallyn is a grand 3-story, 32,000 square-foot mansion that was built from 1913-1917 by George Marshall Allen and is rich in history. It features over 40 rooms abounding with architectural intricacies and surprising details around every corner.
Mr. Allen was a successful businessman who traveled the world. During his visits to England he became intrigued with Tudor style architecture. He decided to commission an architect to replicate a 16th century Warwickshire castle called Compton Wynates that intrigued him on one of his trips to the English countryside.
Mr. Allen hired New York architect Charles I. Berg to visit and study Compton Wynyates, and to adapt an architectural design plan for a country estate on a Morris County property he had acquired. Mr. Allen chose the wooded land, as it is reminiscent of the rolling English countryside where Compton Wynyates stands. As the property sits on the edge of a deep glen, he bestowed the name Glynallyn upon the homestead.
We are not invited to photograph any of the interior spaces – but were free to share the gardens. Enjoy!
