Many Jersey citizens lay claim that NJ is the home to the diner. But having grown up in Queen and Long Island where they wear their diners just as proudly, they would laugh at this claim. Diners are a cultural phenomenon that make people quite defensive if you challenge them to a diner throw down.
But in this week’s Newark Star Ledger, Peter Genovese does his own investigation and reveals the best of the best. In his research he found that there are 600 diners statewide making it the # 1 state for diners. In his quest to write a comprehensive piece he had a meal at all of them. While he doesn’t divulge the total list he reveals is #1 and runner up;
His favorite of all is… The Americana in East Windsor, NJ. The servers — known here as “captains” — never go into the kitchen; that’s the job of “runners.” “Expeditors” act as liaisons between the kitchen and dining room, which is decorated in a ’50s-retro style. There’s also a cool lounge and outdoor patio.
Fresh ingredients are a big part of what makes the food so tasty. They bake their own breads, imported Greek olive oil Feta Cheese from France (it crumbles less than Greek Feta). I’m never in that area of the state so if you go please let me know if it deserves the #1 spot.
