Sometimes we forget just how fortunate we are to live just 25 miles outside of New York City. Yes residents in neighboring towns have to put up with incredibly high real estate taxes and housing prices for easy access to this cultural mecca. That’s why we have to make the most of living near it.
On your next visit you will want to make time to experience Eataly – one of NYC’s unique and unrivaled food and drink establishments. As you may have thought, the name is a contraction for Eat and Italy and is completely apropos.
Located conveniently in midtown (23rd St.and 5th Ave), housed in an old NYC building (most probably a former bank), the backdrop is composed of natural stone and marble with many architectural details, including arches, molding and more. Overall, the design, layout and merchandising are such that you want to try and/or buy everything in the building.
There is a vegetarian cafe called Le Verdure which offers delectable dishes using all locally grown produce, Manzo -a more formal restaurant serving meat from the US, a homemade pizza and pasta cafe, a gelateria, 2 coffee cafes and many others.
This past Friday night myself and my daughter spent the evening tasting and crawling from station to station. First, we enjoyed a delicious sampling of homemade Boconccini and Italian ham with an equally great glass of red wine at La Piazza, standing at one of their bar height tables.
Then we sat for dinner at Il Pesce the fish restaurant. We ordered a wonderful beer from Dogfish Head brewery and ate simply and delectably prepared fresh fish with a side order of roasted cauliflower with raisins and pine nuts.
With our savory taste buds more than adequately satisfied, we meandered over to the Gelateria for dessert. With so many delicious sounding flavors to choose from we had a very hard time deciding. In the end we sampled the banana and the hazelnut flavors and agreed both were excellent. We left Eataly feeling very inspired and satiated.
Please don’t miss this special gastronomical experience. At your earliest convenience visit Eataly and you will be sooooo happy you did. For more information about it, including directions, address and to order some of their foods on line go visit their website here.
