History
Livingston is named after New Jersey’s first Govenor, William Livingston, and was incorporated in 1862. During the 1800′s, farming and lumber were the main industries in town. The town grew slowly since it was not easily accessible – until the advent of the automobile. As a suburb of Newark, it expereinced many housing developments after World War II until the 1970′s.
Today, Livingston is home to more than 28,0000 residents who are generally well-educated and affluent. It is a town that is known for “having it all.” There is a wide variety of shops, the Livingston Mall, boutiques, restaurants and professional spaces. Together these commercial enterprises make Livingston very favorable when it comes to real estate taxes in Essex County, NJ.
While the train line does not run through Livingston it does have an excellent bus service with many stops in the area. Passengers are dropped off at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan.
In general, Livingston’s property values have remained strong during the current adverse market conditions. It is a very desirable destination for families and individuals looking for a sprawling suburb, with very diverse home inventory and easy access to NYC.
